Off and Running

The Stephen Sondheim Encyclopedia was released on April 15, and there’s been a lot of interest already. Several hundred people tuned in to the live-streamed launch on Friday evening, April 16. (If you missed it, you can watch Rick’s conversation with David Armstrong — including some challenging trivia questions for attendees — via a YouTube recording: www.tinyurl.com/5ra3aftn)  On Sunday, April 18, Rick was hosted by members of London’s Stephen Sondheim Society for an international Zoom conversation.

These events and other publicity (check the Coverage menu for lots of links) have resulted in brisk sales. Rowman & Littlefield, the Encyclopedia’s publisher, reported that the initial print run had already sold out and more books were in the pipeline to fill several hundred more orders. It was especially exciting to see that Amazon’s “Hot New Releases in Musicals” ranked the Encyclopedia #1 over its first weekend. It continued to hold its own as a popular choice for several more days!

Check out Rick’s interview with Alan Seales, episode 139 on his Theatre Podcast that’s just been made available.
