Jon Bennett has been an award winning solo Fringe artist for two decades. The Australian monologist is back for his third Cincy Fringe (in the past he presented memorable performances of “Dad (hates) Jokes” and “Fire in the Meth Lab), this time presenting AMERICAN’T, which I saw on Tuesday evening, June 10. It’s a tale that involves meeting a woman to whom he’s now married, fleeing home to his very odd family in rural South Australia, and — mostly — returning to the USA and getting stuck in an Oregon airport for lengthy interrogation during COVID. It’s an unusual catch-all of humorous material, delivered at fever pitch and illustrated with a jaunty slide show featuring wry captions and images of an amusing obsession. Bennett has just one more performance, Thursday, June 12, in the reverberant sanctuary of First Lutheran Church on Race Street opposite Washington Park. It’s well worth making the effort to attend.
