Four decades have passed since Cincinnati Opera produced a piece of musical theater. It’s back with a bang, a big, bold staging of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, on stage at Cincinnati Music Hall through a Sunday matinee on July 27. European performer Max Hopp offers a very different take on Tevye, and his performance is worth seeing. But the entire cast (there are 60+ people onstage, including a violinist/fiddler from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra) is top-notch in this engaging production.
Lots of strong voices, imaginative staging and wonderful lighting effects, plus the powerful sound of the CSO. If you see a show on Broadway or a touring production at the Aronoff, you’ll be lucky if there are 20 musicians. With the CSO in the pit, there’s three times that many, and the make this tuneful score really soar. Some great dancing with talent from the Cincinnati Ballet (Fiddler‘s “bottle dance” is always a show-stopper) is worth seeing, too.
